Messi takes Argentina to another great win and is ready for the World Cup
In response to an on-field, during-play request for a signature, Lionel Messi scored a memorable goal.
Argentina trounced Jamaica 3-0 on Tuesday night in its final World Cup warm-up game, extending its unbeaten streak to 35 games over three years. Messi scored twice and was again assaulted by supporters running onto the pitch.
"You have to enjoy Messi," Argentina
coach Lionel Scaloni said. "No matter your country,
everyone does. I'm his coach, but I would buy a ticket to see him."
"There are no words to describe what he
is," Álvarez said. "Playing five, 10 minutes or all the match, he
manages to do amazing things."
In the 65th minute, a fan raced onto the pitch and attempted to take a picture of Messi. Messi stood and observed as the fan at his feet was restrained while still attempting to take a photo with his phone.
Three months before his 35th birthday, the six-time world player of the year increased the advantage by moving forward after a pass-and-go with Giovani Lo Celso in the 86th minute and beating goalkeeper Andrew Blake to the goalie's left on a 23-yard left-foot effort.
Messi was asked to sign his back by a bare-chested fan after his first goal, and as he began to do so, three guards tackled the individual and more rushed in.
Messi scored 16 career goals in the U.S.
After being tackled by Adrian Mariappa outside the penalty area, Messi scored again three minutes later. For his eleventh free-kick goal for Argentina, Messi blasted the kick through the defensive wall and directly to a sprawling Blake's right arm.
Messi now has 16 goals in his career in the United States after scoring four goals in Argentina's two World Cup warmup games this month.
Less than a minute into the second half, Messi and his teammates headed to a corner to warm up, to the cheers of the crowd. Fans got up and made the stadium rumble when Messi came on for Lautaro Martnez and stole the captain's armband from Angel Di Maria. A huge portion of the audience appeared to be more interested in Messi stretching than they were in the action on the field.
Messi's presence revitalized Argentina in the second half. Messi, who won his first senior title for Argentina at the Copa América last year, still has greater speed and quicker acceleration than others. Additionally, he made Blake perform two diving saves.
It felt like an Argentina home game because many of the 25,000 fans in the sold-out Red Bull Arena were wearing blue and white striped Albiceleste jerseys. Spanish-language public speech announcements predominated, and "Vamos Argentina!" was flashed on ribbon boards.
Nicolás Tagliafico's pass from the flank to Martnez, who turned around Leon Bailey to create space, and then centered to the 22-year-old lvarez, gave Argentina the lead. In his second goal in 11 international games, he slid past Blake.
Argentina is going to the World Cup for the 13th time in a row, and it hopes to add to the titles it won in 1978 with Mario Kempes and 1986 with Diego Maradona. Argentina will play the United Arab Emirates in a final friendly on November 16 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Argentina will play Mexico and Poland after facing Saudi Arabia, which on Tuesday played the United States to a scoreless draw in an exhibition match. The World Cup is being held in Qatar.
Since losing 2-0 to Brazil at the Copa América on July 2, 2019, Argentina has amassed 25 victories, one of which came on penalties, and 10 draws.
